The story, set on a South Sea Island during World War II, sees young navy nurse, Nellie Forbush, falling for the charm of middle aged plantation owner, Emile de Becque. The arrival on the scene of Lt. Joseph Cable, homesick for the girl he left behind but set on a mission to bring a speedy end to the war, creates a further romantic involvement when he is captivated by the mystical, hypnotic Bali Hai, and Liat, daughter of Bloody Mary.
What might be visions of a simple romantic scenario with boys meet girls, boys marry girls, are shattered however with the emergence of bigotry and racial prejudice. The feelings that Nellie and Joe have been born with and rules they have 'been carefully taught' obstruct the path to true love. This being set in the atmostphere of the bewitching South Pacific.
