Early in 2008 members of the North Ormesby Minstrels’ committee sat around discussing ways in which we could mark our 30th anniversary. A colourful, entertaining and well performed show came top of the list followed quickly by ideas about a Ball, a party, a BBQ, a theatre trip or a barn dance, when one member of the committee (I won’t say who it was, Helen Brooks) suggested a Dramathon. Suddenly it all fell into place. Why, what better way for a drama group to mark its anniversary than by engaging in its core activities of singing, dancing and acting all through the day and night, in fact a mind boggling 30 hours of non-stop endeavour? At the same time, seeking sponsorship could help to support the ongoing activities of the group, whose only financial support comes from ticket sales.

So in one mad moment it was agreed and the 30 hour Dramathon was born. This event took place over the Friday & Saturday of the 24th/25th July in the Trinity Centre and I am proud to report that for every single minute of every hour there were Minstrels engaging in dramatic activities, from tap dancing to acting and improvisation, from singing and learning new harmonies to practising the art of stage make-up, culminating in a performance on Saturday evening of a snatch from every show from the past 30 years. Now that was a marathon. Throughout the whole time our band of faithful tea ladies served food and drink and we were joined by ex-members and supporters who took part or just gave us encouragement.

Overall it was a fantastic effort requiring a level of commitment and teamwork that the Minstrels are famed for. The event yielded many happy memories and, hopefully when sponsorship money is collected in, a useful boost to our bank account. In particular we would like to thank the following companies or patrons who sponsored hours;

David Robinson of Bryan Campbell Butchers Les and Gill Southerton Alan Hornby Plumbing Services
SBV Engineering Ltd Queensland Acadamy of Dance, Redcar Heatherdene Hotel, Goathland Cleveland Sitesafe Tony Duffy Keith Lewis Eddie Robson Haslam Homes Fox Land and Property
